This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of Varanasi (Benares), India, located on the River Ganges. The city is considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, and is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the entire world. The captions write, "Waterfront of Benares, India, the Holy City of the country, on the banks of the sacred River Ganges. Bathing in its waters is supposed to purify one from all sins, and to die on its banks is an assurance of eternal felicity. Burning of bodies on the banks of the Ganges. The remains of the wholly or partially cremated bodies are thrown into the stream. The water if filthy and corrupt, but is drunk with avidity, and large quantities are bottled and bring high prices from pious devotees."
