This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge. The palace was built in 1078 by William the Conqueror and was resented by the people, as it was a symbol of oppression. It served as a royal palace and later as a prison. The caption writes, "It has held in its dungeons prisoners of state who bore the greatest names in England, to whom it has opened its portals only for the short walk that led to the headsman and the block."
