This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the burial and grave sites of the first American soldiers to fall in France during World War I. Shown are the rites being given during the burial for Corporal James B. Gresham, Private Thomas E. Enright, and Private Merle D. Hay. The burial site for Hay and Enright can be seen in the lower image. The French inscription on the sign reads, "Here lie the first soldiers of the illustrious republic of the United States, who fell on French soil for justice and liberty, Nov. 3, 1917."
