This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of a French tank pushing through the woods near the Somme, and the bottom image portrays a German tank that had been captured by the French. The caption for the latter writes, "One of the clumsy German tanks that had been captured by the French in the Somme campaign. The Germans tried to make tanks that could cope with the enemy's machines, but they were too unwieldy and never became effective weapons."
