This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of General Pershing responding to Congress after they thanked him for his work during the war. The caption writes, "General Pershing acknowledging the thanks of Congress, which were tendered to him in joint session September 18, 1919. It was the twenty-sixth time that Congress had bestowed its thanks upon a soldier. The General's reply was forceful and felicitous." John J. Pershing was the leader of the American Expeditionary Forces, and is the only person to be promoted to the highest possible army ranking during his lifetime-- the General of the Armies.
