This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of United States soldiers in a field and in the trenches of Lorraine, France during World War I. The caption for the bottom image writes, "Some of the first American soldiers to arrive in France placed in front-line trenches on the Lorraine sector. The enemy are not many yards distant, and a sharp watch is being kept on their movements."
