This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of French soldiers in the trenches of the Aisne sector. The bottom image depicts the German troops on the Aisne. The caption writes, "It was to that river they had retreated in September of 1914, after the defeat on the Marne, at which time their vanguard had come within twenty miles of Paris. From the Aisne they were in time pressed back to the Somme and then to the Vesle and the Meuse."
