This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the first trenches being dug by American troops in the Chateau-Thierry sector. The bottom image shows the 42nd division on the front line in France (Republique Française). The caption writes, "One of the forty-second division companies in the front-line trenches, France. Most of their intensive training was done on the other side, and in a surprisingly short time they were transformed from recruits into veterans."
