Ever wondered what the estates of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange look like beyond the realm of your own imagination? Period Paper is excited to offer a collection of exquisite illustrations by English artist, Thomas Mackenzie of the actual locations that inspired the famous literary works of the Bronte Sisters. Mackenzie himself was born in the city of Bradford, England, which is near the area that the Bronte family lived and fictionalized in classic novels such as Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall . Mackenzie's fondness for the region is reflected in every minute detail used to recreate the worlds present in Victorian literature. Vivid color and sharp tones characterize the beauty and vastness of West Yorkshire, England, making the images seem less like an illustration and more like a portal into another world. This piece was illustrated by Mackenzie, Thomas .
Thomas Mackenzie (1887-1944), was an English artist during the Golden Age of Illustration. He was born in Bradford, England and by the early 20th century was commissioned to create illustrations and watercolors for several books. His Art Nouveau style was similar to that of his peers, Aubrey Beardsley and Kay Nielsen. Although Mackenzie tried to further his career as a painter, he remained unsuccessful and later died in France.
