This is an original 1925 black and white halftone print of the entrance to the Beer Quarry Caves near the village of Beer in Devon, England. Although it would be exciting to learn that beer could simply be mined from naturally occurring subterranean cellars, the tunnels in this picture are prized for their beer stone, which was a favored building material in the construction of cathedrals and churches throughout the medieval period up to the present day.
