This is an original 1927 halftone print of an image of the military regalia of the Ao Warrior, consisting of a brilliant costume flashing with color and barbaric splendor. His weapons are the long spear and the dao or chopper-shaped axe. On his head is a chaplet of cane covered with bear fur from which rise the bright feathers of the sacred hornbill. Strings of bear tusks hang from his neck, an elaborately embroidered baldric fringed with red hair covers his chest, and bright cowrie shells adorn his apron and gauntlets.
From the back his costume is scarcely less magnificent. The strange ornament slung across the shoulders has a grim significance. The two lines of cowrie shells represent the teeth of the enemy; the deep fringe of scarlet dog's hair hanging below symbolizes blood gushing from the mouth. Human hair is used to make tail which fantastically completes the costume.
