This is an original 1927 halftone print of the H.M.S. Guardian colliding with an iceberg. The Guardian was originally commissioned to take part in the American War of Independence, but instead entered service as a store and convict transport to Australia captained by Edward Riou.

On the second half of its voyage to Australia, the Guardian struck an iceberg and was in immediate danger of sinking. After attempts to repair the ship failed, Riou ordered the majority of the crew into lifeboats. Riou remained with the ship, eventually navigating the badly damaged ship, with the assistance of his remaining crew, back to the Cape of Good Hope.
