Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1930-1903) was a French painter, hailing from the U. S. Virgin Island of St. Thomas, who specialized in impressionism and pointillism styles. Pissarro received his formal art education at the Academie Suisse in France. His works primarily centered on agricultural scenes, Parisian hotels, landscapes, cityscapes, the outdoors, figures, and self portraits. His art has been exhibited at the Paris Salon and others. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, only 40 of PissarroÕs 1,500 paintings, which spanned 20 years, were destroyed as the soldiers used them as floor mats to keep mud from their boots. While, PissarroÕs unique artworks have historically inspired both criticism and critical acclaim, the surviving pieces have sold for millions of dollars.
