Ernest Borough Johnson (1867-1949)
Johnson was a native of Shropshire, England, born in small town of Shifnal. His skills as a painter included work in oils, pastels, charcoals and tempura. Although he is well known for his portraits, landscapes were another arena in which he excelled. Not only did he publish several books featuring his work, he was a recognized member of the faculty at Bedford College, teaching art there for many years. He is especially noted for illustrating Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
