This is an original 1932 halftone print of a bull fight. Women are shown watching from the stands, and a matador is shown with a puncture in his thigh. The caption writes, "A matador is almost always gored in the thigh between groin and knee. A duty of his page is to stand by with a rubber cup to clap over a split artery. The wounded one will be taken in a waiting ambulance to a hospital, run by his union, where surgeons specialize in thigh wounds. And if he dies first, there is a matadors' chapel on the arena grounds, and a priest hired by the management for $1 a fight."

Bullfighting is a sport prominent in Spain, Portugal, and a few Latin American countries. It is considered a blood sport by some, and regarded as a fine art by others. Bulls can only be used once, and the fight is usually over when the bull is killed; however, in Portugal, it is illegal to slaughter the bull in the ring. Currently, horses wear a protective "peto", an armor worn to protect their internal organs from any damage from the bull. Before 1928, horses did not wear protective gear, and were often disemboweled.
