Tobacco production dates back to the 17th century in the United States, and was originally planted for pipes and snuff. It was a giant cash crop in the southern United States, and saw tremendous growth once the cigarette was invented in the mid-1800s. The decline of tobacco happened after it was declared a health hazard and a cause of cancer in the mid-1900s. When looking at a tobacco plant, the best tobacco comes from the center of the stalk. The higher you go from the center, the stronger the flavor. The closer to the ground, the more mild.
