This is an original 1934 halftone print of the Cafe de la Terrasse in Lourdes, France. The caption writes, "Bright spot in the commercialism of the town in this cafe over the river. Here an enterprising management serves national drinks, plays national airs for groups of homesick pilgrims bent on adding pleasure to piety." In 1858, a young girl named Bernadette Soubirous saw a woman who called herself 'the Immaculate Conception,' who was believed to be the Virgin Mary. Since then, hundreds of people visit the city for healing, and for religious purposes. Photography by Gerlach.
