Biala, Janice

Janice Biala (1903 - 2000) was a Polish-born American painter held in high regard in both France and the United States. Her paintings often portray intimate interiors, places she traveled, and portraits of her famous friends. In 1939, Biala returned to the United States, moving to New York. There she befriended Willem de Kooning and critic Harold Rosenberg, becoming on of the few women associated with the New York School, participating in the important abstract expressionist discussion group at Studio 35 and frequently exhibiting at the Stable Gallery in 1950. Her artistic career spans nearly eight decades; she is celebrated for her unique contribution to modernism, successfully and deftly assimilating the School of Paris style and the abstract expressionism of the New York School.
