This is an original 1937 halftone print of the port in Jaffa, Israel. The caption writes, "Offshore at Jaffa. There is never any doubt about the identity of Export's Hog Islanders." 'Hog Islanders' were ships built on Hog Island, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although well-built, the ships were usually unattractive. The Export Steamship Corporation, which was founded in 1919, and is currently known as the American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines. The line went bankrupt in 1977 and was acquired by New York's Farrell Lines. Photography by Gardner Wells from Nesmith.
