This is an original 1937 halftone print of a scrap yard. The caption writes, "Scrap moves from freight cars into barges, then into hoists, then into the holds of ships, and then, perhaps, into future European wars. These are Schiavone-Bonomo shipments to Europe, like the 12% of U. S. scrap iron and steel which was shipped to foreign parts last year. This outflow has been instrumental in upping the domestic prices of scrap toward peacetime highs."

Photography by William M. Rittase (1894-1968). He was an American photographer active from the 1920s to the 1930s. He is best known for his industrial photography and portraits often used in Fortune Magazine.
