This is an original 1938 black and white photogravure of a fresco by Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesco in which Christ, recently ressurected, poses above the sleeping Roman guards who were supposed to be watching his tomb. The guard holding the lance appears to have no legs, possibly intentional as to not ruin the composition of the piece. The guard directly below Christ is actually a self-portrait of the artist, and the flagpole which Jesus hold is thought by some to represent the connection the artist had with God.
