This is an original 1938 halftone print of a Japanese screen titled, "Snow Incidents," originally created between the late 16th century and early 17th century. In the extreme right hand panel, the 10th century provincial governor, Li Chi, can be seen traveling with his attendants and calling on the poet Ho-ching (Lin Pu). In the central panel, Su Wu, the warrior of the 1st century, can be seen imprisoned in a cave. The man crossing the bridge illustrates a saying by Cheng Ch'i, the prime minister of the 8th century, which said, "Poetic thoughts may be awakened only when, in a blizzard, one crosses the Bridge of Pa on a donkey's back." The large house shows a group of people surrounding Ou-yang Hsiu, who had composed a poem about snow, and the small house below shows Sun K'ang of the 4th century studying.

Period Paper is pleased to present a collection of halftone prints featuring Japanese art screens and sliding panels, or fusuma. The original pieces were displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, during the winter of 1935-1936, in order to acquaint the public with Japanese artwork. The exhibition offered pieces from the Ashikaga, Momoyama, Tokugawa and Meiji periods, and featured numerous artists from each time frame. It is an interesting collection and depicts the transformation of Japanese artwork from the 15th to the 20th century.
