This is an original 1939 black and white halftone print of the Villa (House) di Diomedes. A wealthy estate excavated in the buried city of Pompeii. Belonging to a wealthy Roman family, this estate overlooked the Gulf of Naples and boasted an enormous colonnade lined garden (pictured center) with a pool in a cryptoporticus (covered gallery). It was here that the preserved remains of the master of the house and his eighteen guests, mainly women who were weighed down by their jewelry were found. It is said that they were overtaken by the lava when fleeing from Mount Vesuvius's eruption.
