William Gropper
William Gropper (1897-1977) was a native of New York City, prior to relocating to Great Neck Estates in New York. He was most recognized for his paintings, illustrations, sculptures, printmaking, murals, mosaics and graphic art design, as well as his abstract and cartoonist styles. GropperÕs works primarily centered on American scenes, caricatures, New York City views, social realism, satire, still life, portraits, military and war themes, figures, religion, landscapes, humor, cityscapes, animals and historical subjects. His art has been exhibited at the International Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Society of Independent Artists, the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Corcoran Gallery of Washington, D. C. Gropper was affiliated with the WPA Federal Arts Project, the Audubon Society of Artists and the Society of Independent Artists. He received his formal art education at the National Academy of Design School and the New York School of Art (Chase School). Gropper also studied under George Bellows, Robert Henri and Jay Hambidge.
