1939 Print Cordell Hull State Mail Letters Will Harris McAvoy Secretary FZ1

This is an original 1939 halftone print of the inner-workings of letter sending at the State Department. Shown is a person punching wax stamps onto envelopes, a man tying off a newspaper pouch, and an image of Miss Will Harris, Mr. Cordell Hull's private secretary. Hull had asked to take Will Harris to Washington D. C. with him when he served as a United States Representative. There they stayed for the next decade. Photography by Thomas D. McAvoy.
