This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of Jan Van Eyck's
Madonna of Chancellor Rolin, originally commissioned by the Chancellor for his parish church in Autun. His likeness is on the left, kneeling in adoration of the nonplussed Madonna and naked Christ Child, who is signing with his right hand and holding a cross with his right. This masterpiece has complex light sources and incredibly fine details, down to the metal crown and mantle decorations of the Virgin Mother. The two figures in the middle ground are thought to be the artist (wearing his usual red hat) and his assistant.
