This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of an unfinished painting by Michelangelo known as Manchester Madonna, after it was displayed at an exhibition there in 1857. Today it resides in the National Gallery, London. Mary's breast is uncovered, which was a common theme for medieval representations of the Mother. The Christ child reaches across her lap with his cousin John beside him, whose life as John the Baptist is foreshadowed by the animal skin he wears. Behind him, angels read off a scroll, twins of those that were unfinished on the other side. This was one of Michelangelo's earlier works.
