This is an original 1942 halftone print of a pilot exercising on a bicycle with an oxygen mask on. The caption writes, "This prevents aeroembolism, an ailment analgous to the bends of deep-sea divers, caused by the occurrence of nitrogen bubbles in the body at low atmospheric pressures above 30,000 feet. Breathing oxygen and exercising thirty minutes eliminates nitrogen, but combat pilots would rarely have time for such a ritual." Photography by Dmitri Kessel.
