This is an original 1942 halftone print of the home of Charles Chadwell and seven other carpenters from Mobile, Alabama. The image depicts the city's housing crisis at the time. During World War II, Mobile was the center of a massive military effort, as it was one of eighteen cities producing Liberty ships, or cargo ships. Also built in the city shipyards were freighters, destroyers and minesweepers. This led to a large influx of workers coming into the city so quickly that there was nowhere to house them.
