This is an original 1942 color print of the Atlas Imperial Diesel Engine plant in Mattoon, Illinois. The caption writes, "Atlas is expanding its plant for the first time in years, has more than five times its usual number of employees, and pays the highest wages in town." At the time of this image, Mattoon was home to 17,000 people. 800 of them were fighting, there had been 16 casualties, and 550 worked at the Atlas factory.
