This is an original 1943 halftone print of the aftermath of bombing on Gasmata, Papua New Guinea. The white scratches are fallen trees from the 500-pound bombs. Gasmata was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and liberated by the Australian army in March of 1944. In the beginning of the war, targets were set based on military function, but between 1939 and 1942, the policy was slowly abandoned, and bombs were sent down on civilians and city infrastructure.
