This is an original 1943 halftone print of a vegetable garden in London near a bombed station. The caption begins, "Lord Woolton, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, has brought the farm into the city in a drive to increase Britain's self-sufficiency in food. So successful have their efforts been that today Britain is producing two-thirds of the amount of food she requires for 'fighting fitness'-- an increase of almost 100% over prewar years..." In the beginning of the war, targets were set based on military function, but between 1939 and 1942, the policy was slowly abandoned, and bombs were sent down on civilians and city infrastructure.
