This is an original 1943 color print of the Permanente Magnesium plant at the base of the Santa Clara foothills. Shown in the image is a crane dropping a magnesium retort into the battery of furnaces. The plant was producing at a rate of 4,500 tons of magnesium a year, which was enough at the time to make 9,000 bombers.
