Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828)
Recognized as one of America's most prominent portraitists, Gilbert Stuart created over 1,000 pieces during his lifetime. His best known work continues to be an unfinished painting of George Washington, commonly referred to as The Athenaeum. Most Americans are familiar with it, whether they realize it or not, as that particular portrait is featured on the American one-dollar bill. Although Stuart suffered a stroke near the end of his life, he continued to work away diligently right up until his death.
