This is an original 1945 color print of a kamikaze falling short of its Allied target. The caption writes, "A suicide plane is brought down blazing just short of its target." Kamikazes, or Japanese pilot suicide attacks, became very popular during the last stages of the war in the Pacific theatre. The attacks were made to inflict as much destruction as possible on Allied warships, so the aircrafts were stocked with explosives, torpedoes, fuel tanks and bombs.
