This is an original 1945 halftone print of Alexis of Russia, or Aleksey Mikhailovich Romanov. Mikhailovich ruled from 1645 to 1676, and was often accused of witchcraft and sorcery. The caption writes, "Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich, bejeweled and bewhiskered, effected in 1656 the first Russian diplomatic contact with China, when he sent Envoy Baikov to Peking (Beijing). Two centuries later his country was so great a force in Manchuria that it developed Dairen and Port Arthur and a railroad connecting them to Russia. Japan's answer was the war of 1904-05."
