Period Paper has obtained a collection of lithographs featuring various Hua Yang patterns from multiple provinces of China. These patterns were often used during paper cutting, and represented symbolic ideas and thoughts rendered through the animals, flowers, and figures portrayed within the pieces. These motifs could also be seen in Chinese embroidery under two categories-- one sketched and used in larger projects, and the other, on smaller clothing articles, including on dresses, aprons, and children's footwear. These silhouettes were cut freehand with scissors; several were usually created at one time by stacking the papers, and were known as hua yang. The images in this collection were collected by Huang Chung and Wang Li'an over a period of several years.
