This is an original 1950 black and white photogravure of the port of the town of Ouistreham which is located in the Basse-Normandie (Normandy) region in northwestern France. This port also serves the city of Caen and Ouistreham is situated around the Canal de Caen a la Mer which is fed by the Orne river.
Normandy is the historical region corresponding to the former Duchy of Normandy in northern France. It lies along the English Channel and is traditionally divided into Upper and Lower Normandy. In World War II, the D-Day landings occurred along the Normandy beaches and that event began the lengthy Battle of Normandy which many believe was the turning point of that war.
