This is an original 1950 black and white photogravure of the ruin of Hambye Abbey which is located near to Hambye in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy in northern France. This ruin was founded in 1145 by Benedictine monks but has fallen into disrepair.

Normandy is the historical region corresponding to the former Duchy of Normandy in northern France. It lies along the English Channel and is traditionally divided into Upper and Lower Normandy. In World War II, the D-Day landings occurred along the Normandy beaches and that event began the lengthy Battle of Normandy which many believe was the turning point of that war.
