This is an original 1952 monochrome in-text lithograph of the Italian front and both Allied and Axis army movements after the D-Day Normandy invasions. The jump from North Africa to Italy began with great Allied success, including the surrender of the Italian government in September of 1943, however, breaking out of Italy proved nearly impossible as German resistance bottlenecked American and British offensives in the North. However, once the Normandy front opened, Germany weakened the Italian front to aid the defenders in France, allowing the Allies to slowly continue advancing in the Summer of 1944.
