This is an original 1955 halftone heliogravure of hats by Georges Braque, which was published with his permission in a special edition of the art portfolio, Verve.

Period Paper is pleased to offer original lithographs and heliogravures from a collection of drawings by Georges Braque (1882-1963), the French Fauvist/Cubist painter. These drawings or sketches were produced from images found in Braque's personal sketchbooks --"Carnets de Travail" kept by the artist for more than thirty years, and later published in a special edition of Verve. Through these drawings or "doodles" we can see the inner workings of the artist's imagination as he captures a graphic record of fragments of the visible world that have caught his attention and develops ideas for future paintings.

Braque, Georges

Georges Braque (May 13, 1882-Aug. 31, 1963) was a major 20th century French painter and sculptor. He, along with Picasso, developed the Cubist movement. He painted houses during the day and studied artistic painting during the evenings at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre before moving to Paris where he attended Academie Humbert. At first his style was impressionistic until he discovered and adapted to the Fauvist style. He exhibited his Fauvist work at the Salon des Independants before being influenced by Paul Cezanne. CezanneÕs work affected many of the avant-garde artists of Paris causing it to transform into Cubism. He died in Paris and is buried in the cemetery of the Church of St. Valery in Varengevill-sur-Mer, Normandy, whose windows he designed.
