Barlachwas a part of the avant-garde, modernist movement called Expressionism. It originated in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century and remained popular during the Weimar culture in the 1930s. It aims to present the world from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. Artists in this movement sought to express meaning or emotional experience rather than physical reality.
