1962 Print Wall Energy Rotterdam Netherlands E-55 Portrait Karel Appel XAQ4
Appel was developing his own, unique style in the 40s using found objects and dabbling in the "childish" painting style. He was heavily influence by Picasso and Mattise and started the artist's group called CoBrA (Copenhagen, Bruxelles, Amsterdam).
To understand his work better one can take interest in Herbert Read's evaluation of Appel's work: "Always distinguish between vitality and violence. Though Appel's paintings may be said to stream with the blood of animals, they are not patches from the floor of an abattoir: they represent the physical substance of life itself. Their colors are living, moving, never coagulated or faded. They stream through the field of vision as natural forces, conveying life to hearts that are invisible only because they are hidden within our own breasts.
