"Phaethornis Longuemareus"

This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of two members of the Phaethornis Longuemareus family, more commonly known as the Longuemare Hermit. With an average length of 94 mm., the feathers around the ears are dark purple, and the rump is chestnut. The tail feathers are of graduated lengths and are jointly fan-shaped, with chestnut extremities. The beak is long and slightly curved, black above and yellow below, especially near the base. This species lives in the humid tropical zones from southeastern Mexico to eastern Peru and southwestern Brazil. The orchid, known as Catasetum integerrimum, has the common name of The Intact Catasetum, is native to the region of Cordoba and Orizaba, in the state of Veracruz, as well as the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. It flowers in January and February.
