1963 Color Print Rufous Hummingbird Albescent Laelia Wildlife Mexico Image HMX1
"Selasphorus Rufus"
This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of several members of the Selasphorus rufus, more commonly known as the Rufous Hummingbird. With an average length of 81-87 mm., the male has a metallic scarlet orange-red throat, a white breast and the est of the under parts somewhat reddish. The back is neither metallic green nor bronze, but reddish, which makes this species unmistakable. The tail feathers end in black and are extremely pointed. The female has entirely white under parts. The Rufous Hummingibrd breeds in western North America, from Alaska to Montana. It isits Mexico in the winter months, and the southern limits of its migration are known as the states of Veracruz, Mexico, and Guerrero, where it is found at altitudes varying from 1000 to 8000 feet. The Rufous Hummingbird is one of the most pugnacious species known, for it will not tolerate the presence of any other bird, even of its own kind, in the area it occupies. The orchid pictured is Laelia albida, commonly called Albescent Laelia, grows in eastern Puebla, as well as near Cordoba, Veracruz, and blooms in the autumn.
