This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of a couple members of the Doricha Enicura family, more commonly known as the Slender Shear-Tail Hummingbird. With an average length of 75-106 mm., the throat of the male is purplish-violet and the rest of the uner parts metallic green, excep the abdomen, which is whitish. The tail is very long - up to 50 mm., and deeply forked, the lateral feathers being blackish-purple. The species is common in the high regions from Chiapas to El Salvador and Honduras. The pictured orchid is Epidendrum varicosum, a fairly common plant is Mexico and Central America, blooming usually in May and June.
