William Blake (1757-1826)
Currently ranked 38 on BBC's poll of 100 Greatest Britons, William Blake impressed the world with his poetry, prints, visionary ideas... Posthumously, sadly enough. He is considered to be part of the Romantic Age, and was a creative but highly idiosyncratic individual who regularly claimed to have visions. Several of those traits didn't bode well for making friends, and his contemporaries viewed him as being rather mad. Some of the themes surrounding and flowing through his work include: creation (both religious and philosophical), fantasy, idealism as it pertained to the French and American revolutions, mythology and class rebellion.
